Campaigners fighting moves to hike the state pension age for women have joined forces to confirm their support for a legal challenge against the Ombudsman that is reviewing their case. 

WASPI Chair Hilary Simpson writes to the new Pensions Minister Chloe Smith reminding her that it was maladministration when 1950s women weren’t given proper notice of changes to their state pension age and she should resolve this long-standing issue.

"The issue is about 'fairness', hence my backing of the ongoing campaign. This is about making sure that people had sufficient notice that the arrangements for their pensions were changing."

Hilary Simpson, chair of the Waspi Campaign 2018, said: “We are very grateful to the Leaders of the main Opposition parties for their support.”

She said failure to give 1950s women proper notice of the changes to their pension age had “disastrous” results. 

Hilary Simpson, Chair of the WASPI Campaign, said: “When the Ombudsman recommends compensation we will be urging Parliament to accept it without quibbling, and to implement it fairly and without delay.”

She said Starmer’s backing was huge. "The support of the leader of the opposition for our fair and fast compensation campaign is a welcome development.”

The pledge signed by Starmer reads: "I support fair and fast compensation for 1950s women."

Last week they published a report strongly arguing for "top level" compensation. Hilary Simpson, Chair of Women Against State Pension Injustice (Waspi) 2018, said this confirms the injustice. “We are delighted that the MPs’ report has come out so strongly in favour of the maximum compensation,” she said.
